GENERAL INFORMATION

It’s official. Summer is officially over, but the weather has been so crazy this year that it’s hard to tell when winter will arrive. I, for one, will be happy to see the rain arrive, seeing as how the water level here at Lake Chabot is now almost 8 feet below the spillway (it seems like we’d need about a year of weather like last night’s to get it up again). The general consensus is that the low water levels contributed to the poor Catfish season, but it doesn’t seem to be bothering the Trout at all. A few Cats have come in, while many anglers are still limiting on Trout.

TROUT

No whopper Trout have been brought in over the past week, but many anglers are coming in boasting limits. They are fishing mostly from the Burner and Coots Landing. Lures still seem to be the key, with few or no fish coming in off of Power Bait or worms (at least as far as I know). Silver or Silver/Green Kastmasters seem to be popular, but one of our newer lures – the Magic Bullet – also seems to be working well. Trout were last planted on Monday, 9/21.

BASS

I still have heard nothing about Bass, except that one gentleman who went out for Bass the other day ended up limiting on Trout… I’m not sure what I would recommend for those of you who do want to try for Bass. All I can say is that if I were to gout there, I’d probably be using plastic lures out by Alder Point.

CATFISH

Last week I hypothesized that Catfish season was just about over… And I have been proven wrong. One of our regulars who had been mostly disappointed throughout the summer finally got some justice with a 16 pound 14 ounce whopper. He was sinking some mackerel in the Bass Cove/Dam area from a boat. Bass Cove does seem to be the predominant spot for Cats, so if you’re still looking for Catfish, I’d do what he did.

WHOPPERS

Ken Kruse of San Lorenzo was the one who caught the 16 pound 14 ounce monster Cat on September 21st. He was out near the Dam on a boat; using mackerel sunk about 35 feet deep.

Ed Cortez of Hayward caught an 8.25-pound Catfish. He was fishing from the shore around Coot’s Landing using Orange Power Bait.
