LAKE MOHAVE: The striper bite has been good this week. Fish being
caught in the narrows above Cottonwood Cove, the dam, the marina, and
Owl's Point. Most of the fish are in the 1-0 range and they are being
caught while still fishing with anchovies and squid or trolling
shad-like lures. The catfish bite has been decent during the evenings
and early mornings on anchovies and mackerel. Largemouth bass fishing
has been fair with most fish being caught on nightcrawlers and
plastics in the coves. Plenty of carp to be caught on dough
balls.
BELOW DAVIS DAM: Most of the striper have headed back down river
but a few fish remain. The few fish still lurking below Davis Dam are
mostly large fish above 10-0. The size of the fish caught makes up for
the rarity of fish caught. Best bet is to drift down the river at
night with large jerk baits or Rat-L-Traps.
NEEDLES: Most of the striper have moved down the river to the
northern end of Havasu. The best bet is to fish the transition period
between day and night or late at night with either cut baits or Bomber
Long As. Largemouth are showing in the main river, coves, and weed
beds but few anglers are working the bass. The catfish bite is slow,
but some fish are being landed on mackerel, anchovies, and
nightcrawlers.
TOPOCK MARSH: Extremely low waters have fisherman scratching this
destination off their lists. Water levels are so low that boat rentals
has closed. For more information call (520) 768-2350.
HAVASU: The north end of Havasu is producing some fish. Stripers
and catfish are showing in fair numbers on anchovies, mackerel, and
jerk baits for stripers. The largemouth bass bite has been good but
only in the mornings on surface and reaction baits. The south end of
the lake has been horrible. A few cats were caught.
PARKER STRIP: Fair bass action on small cranks and plastics in the
main river. Quite a few smallmouths in the river. Catfish good with
some decent catches of channels and a few flatheads reported this
week. Stripers slow. Matt Vaughn, 16, Anaheim, caught a new Colorado
River record bluegill Sept. 2 on a nightcrawler. The fish weighed 2.92
pounds.
BLYTHE: Good catfish action in the main river and local ditches
with some quality flatheads showing. The bass bite has been good in
the river and backwaters on topwater plugs around the moss and weed
beds. Stan Jones, Blythe, caught a 6-10 largemouth on a topwater plug.
Mike Sutterfield, Blythe, caught a 3-2 smallmouth. All other species
slow. For information, call B&B Bait at (760) 921-2248.
PALO VERDE: The bass bite is good on live bait, cranks, and
plastics. Catfish are good with the heat. Best bait for catching large
cats has been live bluegill. Good bluegill action on mini-jigs and
meal worms..
PICACHO AREA: Bass are biting really well in all of the local
backwater lakes. Plastics seem to be working the best still. Lots of
2-0 class fish with an occasional bigger fish. The topwater bite is
also pretty good early and late. Fair to good catfish action with some
decent flatheads. Live bluegill or goldfish fished at dusk or after
dark is the best bet. The bluegill bite is good.
MARTINEZ LAKE AREA: Good catfish action in the lakes and around the
lake entrances on chicken liver and stinkbait. The flathead are biting
on bluegill, goldfish, and small carp in the river at night. Good bass
action with waterdogs and shiners best in the deep holes. Plastic
worms and crankbait are also good for bass. Fair striper action in the
lake entrances. Good bluegill bite on mealworms and nightcrawlers. For
more information, contact the Martinez Lake Resort at (520)783-9589 or
check out the web site at www.martinezlake.com.
MITTRY LAKE AREA: The bass bite has been good on early morning and
late evening topwater lures. Live bait also still a good bet, but most
of the fish are near the river entrances to the backwater lakes.
Catfish fair on live minnows. Bluegill good.
YUMA AREA: Light fishing pressure. Few flatheads this past week,
but the bass action is decent. Some channel cats are being caught in
area canals. The bluegill action is good in the backwater lakes. For
more information, contact Mesa Sport Shop at (520) 782-5313.
COLORADO RIVER FLOWS, LAKE ELEVATIONS: This week's projected flow
releases should average (in cubic feet per second): Glen Canyon 7,500,
Hoover 10,800, Davis 12,900, Parker 10,600. Last Friday, flow at Yuma
Fourth Avenue Bridge was 1,105 cfs, and it was 1,440 cfs at the
Northerly International Boundary. Projected lake elevations for
Saturday (and change from last week in parenthesis) are as follows:
Havasu 447.2 (up .5), Mohave 639.7 (down 2.0), Mead 1,179.2 (down .4),

LOWER DESERT WATERS
SALTON SEA: The corvina bite has been slow much of the past week.
Red Hill has been the only spot producing corvina. Bombay Beach is
dead with a bad green tide. There is also some decent action for
boaters from North Shore to Salt Creek. The Salton Sea Beach area has
been decent for tilapia. Both shore fisherman and boaters are getting
tilapia on nightcrawlers. Anglers are reminded the limit on corvina is
five and there is an 18-inch minimum size. Fishermen also need a
regular fishing license for the Salton Sea, not an ocean license. For
current fishing information, call Poor Richard's in Mecca at (760)
396-2180 or Dean Marine in Bombay Beach at (760) 354-1231. You can
